Artist Statement

My work is a comment on the vast amounts of pollution that is having a detrimental impact on our fragile environment. In the last couple of years I became alarmed at the huge quantities of plastic packaging waste that was being thrown into landfill and polluting our waterways and oceans. My recent artworks have been created in response to this problem and aim to create a discussion about the issue so that we can find a solution. My work highlights the problem by using unnatural materials to depict natural scenes. Each artwork is made from hundreds of tiny squares of recycled household plastic packaging that would otherwise be destined for landfill. The squares of plastic are used to create an impression of a scene, altering its original appearance, just as the plastic going to landfill and polluting our oceans alters our natural environment. One of the contributors of earth’s pollution problem is overpopulation. The world has reached a point where it cannot sustain the increasing numbers of humans and the waste that we generate. By responsibly reducing the world’s population there will be less waste, less pressure on resources, lower carbon dioxide emissions, more native forests, more wildlife and a lower population density, all of which will result in a better quality of life.
